Low testosterone, also known as “Low-T” or hypogonadism, is a condition in which the male sex hormone declines to a below-normal level. This occurrence can cause loss of libido, sexual dysfunction, a lack of energy, calcium loss from bones, depression and reduced muscle mass. About half of all men who have diabetes also have low testosterone, while high blood pressure, high cholesterol and being overweight are all also associated with a greater incidence of Low-T. Men who are bothered by the symptoms of low testosterone can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy via injections, patches, oral medications and skin gels. However, it’s important to talk to your doctor about possible side effects of these treatments, which can include male infertility, swollen or sore breasts, acne, an increased volume of red blood cells, and more.
