Liver Transplant Evaluation
Prior to patient becoming eligible for a liver transplant, a thorough medical evaluation must be conducted to ensure against the presence of any factors that would prevent the transplantation from being successful. Physicians who perform liver transplant evaluations focus on the strict criteria that is required to place a patient on the national transplant waiting list, and they provide consultation to other members of the transplantation team with regard to the patient’s overall health status. Due to the difficulty of obtaining an organ for transplant that matches the patient’s profile, the potential for post-operative complications and the complexity of the procedure, a partial or complete liver transplantation is the last treatment option for patients with irreversible liver dysfunction that may be caused by liver cancer, cirrhosis, Hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease, bile duct disease, autoimmune liver disease or possibly a genetic liver disorder.
