Kidney cancer is rarely symptomatic in its early development and is therefore usually not detected until later stages -- most likely by accident during testing for other unrelated illnesses. Screening for this cancer is not something that is done routinely unless the patient is at a high risk for developing it, or they begin developing symptoms such as blood in the urine, low back pain on one side or a fever that doesn’t go away. Treatments may include surgery, medication, radiation therapy and ablation procedures. It is important to attend your annual wellness visits and communicate any abnormalities with your doctor, because the earlier that kidney cancer is detected, the more successful treatment can be.
