Interventional cardiology refers to the medical subspecialty of cardiology in which various heart conditions are diagnosed, evaluated and treated via non-surgical, catheter-based procedures. The catheter is introduced through a large blood vessel in the groin, arm, or occasionally another peripheral artery or vein, and X-rays provide image guidance to help navigate the route into the heart. Interventional cardiologists provide effective treatments for patients with coronary artery disease, heart valve problems and peripheral vascular disease. Procedures in which they specialize include angioplasty and stenting, atherectomy (cutting out plaque deposits), carotid stenting, percutaneous mitral valve repair and embolic protection measures. Our interventional cardiologists are leaders in their field who work within a multidisciplinary medical team to provide the most advanced and effective procedures at AdventHealth facilities throughout the region.
