Hypospadias is a disorder in which the opening of the urethra is situated on the underside of the penis, instead of at the tip. Symptoms may include abnormal spraying during urination, and the appearance of a downward curve and hooded covering at the tip of the penis. Hypospadias is a congenital disorder, meaning it is present at birth. The exact cause of this condition is unknown; however, in some cases it is inherited. As the penis develops in a male fetus, the hormones that stimulate the growth of the urethra and foreskin malfunction, causing the urethra to develop abnormally. This condition is common and can be corrected with surgery.
