Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a rare condition that occurs at birth where the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped. In a baby born with this condition, the heart’s left side cannot effectively pump blood to the body, thereby forcing the right side to work twice as hard. Infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome may have breathing and feeding problems, cold hands and feet, bluish skin and lethargy. The condition is addressed via a procession of surgeries starting with the Norwood Procedure and followed by the Bidirectional Glenn Procedure and Fontan Procedure, consecutively.
