Hernia repair refers to a number of surgical procedures for correcting a bulge that occurs where internal organs begin to push through a weak spot in the abdominal wall or other part of the body. Most hernia repairs can be performed on an outpatient basis via laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery. In a laparoscopic hernia repair procedure, the surgery site is accessed via three to four very small incisions through which a special scope with a tiny camera at the end and other specially designed instruments are introduced. In some surgeries, a patch made of surgical mesh is secured at the affected area to shore up the weak spot. Types of hernia that can be repaired via surgery include hiatal hernias, ventral hernias, inguinal (groin) hernias, femoral hernias, umbilical hernias and incisional hernias.
