Flat feet develop when the longitudinal arch of the foot is not formed properly. This arch naturally develops throughout childhood and is fully formed once the person reaches adulthood. With flat feet, the arch isn’t fully formed and causes children and adults to walk with more weight on the arch side of the foot. Most people with flat feet don’t experience any pain or other symptoms, but they should be evaluated if pain in the foot, ankle or leg begins to develop. Treatments may include using arch support inserts in shoes, stretching the area or bracing it. Careful monitoring will be required to make sure the condition doesn’t worsen and pain doesn’t develop in surrounding areas.
