Women who experience abnormally heavy bleeding and/or severe pelvic pain during their periods may be treated via endometrial ablation, which is a gynecological procedure that can be performed in a doctor’s office or hospital to eliminate the lining of the uterus (endometrium). There are multiple methods for performing an endometrial ablation, but it is always done through the vagina to eliminate the need for external incisions. Sometimes the uterine lining is destroyed using a cold technique called cryoablation; other options employ the use of heated saline fluid, a heated balloon, an electrical current (electrosurgery), microwave technology or radiofrequency energy. Your physician will explain what type of procedure he or she recommends to address your specific condition and symptoms.
