Cyst aspiration generally refers to an interventional medical procedure to address cysts of the breast. While many such cysts are not harmful and can go untreated indefinitely, those that are discharging fluid, causing the patient significant pain or otherwise causing problems may be addressed in this outpatient surgical procedure. Typically, the patient receives a local anesthetic at the location where the needle will be introduced in order to minimize any discomfort they may feel. A radiologist then guides the needle into the cyst and employs a syringe to suction out the fluid from within. Following the procedure, multiple mammograms may be taken in order to make sure that all of the fluid has been extracted. The entire procedure usually only takes a few moments to complete, and in most cases the patient may return to their daily activities right away.
