Coumadin is a common blood thinner (or "anticoagulant") used to treat and prevent blood clots from forming in your veins, arteries or heart. Patients with conditions such as deep vein thrombosis and others that put them at risk for blood clots may be prescribed Coumadin as a preventive measure against heart attack and stroke. Coumadin management requires regular blood tests to determine if the medicine is working. These tests include a prothrombin time (Protime, PT) and an international normalized ration (INR). Our physicians work closely with patients to monitor blood levels through an instantaneous finger-stick method. This allows for immediate therapy adjustments to be discussed and made with the patient.
