Congestive cardiomyopathy refers to a disease or diseases of the heart muscle. In most cases, the heart muscle becomes weak, thick or rigid in texture – and in rare cases, it can be replaced with scar tissue. As cardiomyopathy progresses, the heart gets weaker and less able to perform its regular function of pumping blood through the body and maintaining a normal rhythm. While some patients with cardiomyopathy are without symptoms, others may experience shortness of breath, fatigue and swelling in the abdomen and extremities. This condition can be inherited or may be acquired due to an underlying medical issue. Treatments are aimed at symptom management, eliminating contributors to the condition and mitigating the patient’s risk for cardiac arrest or other complications.
