Candidiasis is a condition in which a fungus (Candida albicans) builds up inside the lining of the mouth or in moist, damp areas of the body such as the underarms. In babies, candidiasis typically occurs in the mouth and diaper areas. Oral candidiasis appears as white, lacy patches on top of a red base that forms on the tongue, palate or elsewhere inside the mouth. Bleeding, loss of taste, bad breath, dryness and burning are common side effects. Candidiasis can appear on other moist parts of the body in the form of vaginal yeast infections, skin and diaper rash, nail bed infections and lesions with a cottage cheese-like appearance. The causes of this condition vary, but can include a weakened immune system, the frequent use of a urinary catheter, HIV/AIDS and diabetes.
