Fractured bones within the hand may cause significant pain, inflammation, weakness and stiffness and should be treated by a medical professional. Casts and splints are often used to allow hand bones to heal properly after they have been set. While not all hand fractures will require surgery to reset the bones, those that do may be stabilized using instrumentation such as pins and screws. Physical rehabilitation is often required following stabilization of a hand fracture. It’s not unusual for a hard bump or “fracture callus” to form at the location of the break as it heals, and this growth will likely diminish over time. Hand injuries and all suspected fractures should be evaluated by your primary care physician or orthopedic specialist to ensure that the hand heals properly and is restored to its normal function.
