Atrial myxoma refers to one of the most common types of heart tumor. These tumors are usually benign but can be malignant. However, all such masses will likely need to be removed in order to allow the heart to function as it should. Sometimes, not all of the tissue from the tumor can be removed at once. Instead, a laser can be applied to destroy the base of the tumor and reduce the likelihood of its reoccurring. Most patients who receive this surgery are able to recover completely and do not experience a relapse.
