DELAND, Fla., October 17, 2016 On Sept. 29, Florida Hospital DeLand and Florida Hospital Fish Memorial celebrated the grand opening of a newly consolidated Florida Hospital outpatient sleep center to serve patients throughout Volusia County.
The facility is located across from Florida Hospital DeLand, at 744 W. Plymouth Ave., and is adjacent to the Centers medical directors office Dr. Hendrik Dinkla.
A board-certified neurologist, Dinkla has practiced in DeLand for more than 25 years and has served as the medical director for Florida Hospital DeLand's sleep disorders center since 1992. He completed training in sleep-disorder medicine at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., and has a board certification in sleep medicine.
Untreated or undertreated sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart attack and congestive heart failure, as well as cardiac dysrhythmias. It also negatively impacts glycemic management and blood pressure management, both of which can have an impact on your health in a number of ways, including body weight, diabetes, and overall cardiovascular health. Furthermore, sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of death from motor vehicle and industrial accidents, said Dinkla. The good news is, treatment of sleep apnea cuts an individual's one-year mortality risk in half.
With four beds, the new outpatient sleep center can accommodate both pediatric and adult patients and primarily helps patients with sleep disorders, which have been linked to hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression and more.
Sleep is just as important as diet and exercise are for our overall health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, a recent study from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) showed more than a third of Americans aren't getting enough sleep, said Debra Allison, Florida Hospital DeLand and Florida Hospital Fish Memorial director of cardiopulmonary and cardiovascular services. One in four men and one in five women have undiagnosed sleep disorders, which can be significant and even life-threatening. People think of snoring as a simple annoyance, but that's just not true. Not getting enough quality sleep each night has implications for your heart and can truly ruin your health.
Florida Hospital Sleep Center provides comprehensive care, including a pre-test physician consultation and post-test follow-up care. Additionally, the Center has a sleep navigator who assists patients throughout the sleep disorders process, beginning with the initial consultation to diagnosis, through treatment prescription, medical equipment delivery, patient compliance, and beyond.
