NEW SMYRNA, Fla., June 1, 2017 On May 25, Florida Hospital New Smyrna delivered the inaugural State of the Hospital address during the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce's May Breakfast Club.
A crowd of more than 75 community members attended the event to learn about the hospitals recent improvements and initiatives, as well as upcoming renovations to patient areas.
Within the past year, we've undergone several upgrades to our IT (information technology) systems. These are major investments and take significant training for staff, but were essential to advancing the level of care we provide, said Ken Mattison, Florida Hospital New Smyrna CEO. Our new IT systems are interconnected and help us provide a better continuity of care, as well as simplify the registration process for patients when visiting the hospital for health care services.
In April 2016, Bert Fish Medical Center joined the Florida Hospital system and was renamed Florida Hospital New Smyrna. In the last year, the 112-bed facility has brought in new clinical leadership, including a chief medical officer and chief nursing officer, as well as additional board members for both the hospital and foundation.
In addition, patient floor areas throughout the hospital are undergoing remodeling to enhance patient care.
These improvements have been challenging due to the exceptionally high patient census we've experienced over the past year, he said. We haven't seen the typical slowdown we usually do during the summer season, which has made it difficult to schedule various facility improvements.
Furthermore, last summer Florida Hospital expanded pediatric services within the New Smyrna Beach community, bringing board certified pediatrician Dr. Mihir Tolat to the Florida Hospital New Smyrna outpatient facility.
