Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Recognizes Nurses with DAISY Awards

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., November 14, 2018 – Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center recognized registered nurses Alana Birk and Jeremy Padgett with the DAISY award.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care provided by nurses.

Birk is a nurse on the Surgical Progressive Care Unit at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. A patient’s family member nominated Birk.

“This nurse is the most bubbly, sweetest nurse!” the family member wrote in a nomination form. “My mom was in the hospital for a week and she knew she was dying and was afraid to be alone. This nurse stayed in her room one night… which goes above and beyond her duties as a nurse. I know how busy nurses are, yet she worked it out, so she could be with my mom as much as possible.”

“My mom remarked how sweet this nurse was and how much she appreciated that. This nurse was also so kind, thoughtful and understanding of us all. She was so comforting to us in such a hard situation,” the nomination continued. “My mom also mentioned to us what a nice talk they had and how she had held her hand. This nurse is truly dedicated and is WONDERFUL with people.”

A patient nominated Padgett, a nurse on Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s intensive care unit (ICU).

“This nurse made me feel special. He never seemed rushed and took extra time with me. I have a younger son with special needs. I told him how my son's condition adds extra stress on my everyday life,” the patient wrote in a nomination form. “He listened to me and heard what I was saying. He assisted me by providing resources to help me live a healthier life. I cannot express in words how much of a difference he made on my stay in the ICU. He comforted me and made me feel safe during a very trying time. He truly is an added gem to your organization. He really helped me forget my worries and made my stay pleasurable. I thank him from the bottom of my heart.”

In recognition of this honor, both Birk and Padgett received an award pin, a tote bag, and a hand-carved stone sculpture of the “Healer’s Touch” by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. Both of their units also received cinnamon rolls and a DAISY banner to display.

Created in 1999, more than 2,400 healthcare facilities in all 50 states, as well as 14 other countries, use the DAISY Award to honor nurses.
