On Thursday, Aug. 18, a surgical team performed its first robot-assisted thoracic surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System, the first of any hospital in Northwest Georgia. This historic surgery took months of preparation, planning and training for the surgical team.
Traditionally, thoracic surgery requires a large incision across the sides of the ribs to access the lungs, esophagus, and chest cavity. The da Vinci® Surgical System enables the surgeon to make several small incisions in place of one large opening in the chest and view 3-dimensional, magnified views of the surgical area and use instruments small enough to operate through one or a few small incisions. Thursday’s surgery was performed by Harbin Clinic thoracic surgeon Ademola Adeseye, MD.
Patients who undergo minimally invasive thoracic surgeries typically experience shorter hospital stays, less pain, quicker recoveries, and are less likely to develop infections. AdventHealth Redmond and AdventHealth Gordon have used the da Vinci Surgical System for gynecological, urological and general surgeries in addition to thoracic surgery.
“We anticipate successful and better outcomes with surgeries using the da Vinci® Surgical System. Surgeons at AdventHealth Redmond will have access to Crowd Sourced Assessment of Technical Skills (CSATS) offered by Johnson & Johnson. This innovative feedback system allows surgeons to confer with robotic experts around the world to enhance their procedural skill." said Julie Barnes, MD, chief medical director of AdventHealth Redmond. “As a leader in medical innovation, we will continue to utilize proven advancements in medicine to better serve our patients.”
