Officials with AdventHealth Manchester and the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center announced that the hospital has joined the Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network (MCCAN) as a candidate member. The MCCAN is a group of community hospitals in the Commonwealth of Kentucky that provides high-quality cancer services and programs in their communities with the support of the Markey Cancer Center. Under the formal collaboration, Markey is working with AdventHealth Manchester to develop and expand its oncology service line.
“We are very excited to be a part of the UK Markey Team and feel this will be a huge asset to our community,” said AdventHealth Manchester Chief Executive Officer Chris Self. “We are committed to providing care right here at home for our patients, and now we have a nationally recognized partner that will help us achieve that goal.”
Situated in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest, AdventHealth Manchester provides healthcare services to Clay, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Leslie and Owsley counties. The facility began service in 1917 as the Oneida Mountain Hospital before building at the current location in 1971. AdventHealth Manchester is a 49-bed acute care, not-for-profit, Christian hospital and is a member of AdventHealth System (AHS), the largest not-for-profit Protestant healthcare organization in the U.S. AdventHealth Manchester provides surgical and medical oncology care to cancer patients and offers cancer screening and early detection programs to residents of Manchester and surrounding counties.
The Markey Cancer Center was founded in 1983 and is a dedicated matrix cancer center established as an integral part of the University of Kentucky and the UK HealthCare enterprise. Markey functions as a multi-faceted, multidisciplinary complex with a mission to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality through a comprehensive program of cancer education, research, treatment and community engagement. In July 2013, Markey became one of only 71 medical centers in the country to earn an NCI cancer center designation. Because of the designation, Markey patients have access to new drugs, treatment options and clinical trials offered only at NCI-designated centers.
“Unfortunately, Kentucky ranks at the top in terms of cancer incidence and mortality,” said Dr. Timothy Mullett, Medical Director of the MCCAN. “But by working together with strong medical centers like AdventHealth Manchester, we have the potential to make a serious impact on cancer prevention and care."
The MCCAN supports UK HealthCare's overall mission of ensuring no Kentuckian will have to leave the state to get access to top-of-the-line health care.
“UK HealthCare doesn’t just serve central and eastern Kentucky – our goal is to provide all Kentuckians with the best possible care,” said Dr. Mark F. Newman, UK Executive Vice President for Health Affairs. “Markey’s Affiliate Network lets us collaborate with community hospitals to provide cancer care much closer to home, saving both time and money for patients.”
