Diabetes Education Center

Diabetes may lead to lifestyle changes, but it doesn’t have to interrupt your life. Our Diabetes Care team works to provide you with the right education to move forward and manage your diabetes with confidence. Our experienced and compassionate team of diabetes specialists can meet with you individually, or in a group setting, to give you the clarity and insights you need about important care topics, including:

  • Blood Sugar Monitoring
  • Complication Prevention
  • Exercise
  • Medication
  • Nutrition
  • Weight Management

Along with valuable information, our diabetes specialists can guide your wellness, giving you food plans, recipes, strategies for eating out, behavior change techniques, tips on how to handle emotional eating, and more. We offer the following:

  • Individual visits with a diabetes nurse educator and a registered dietitian
  • Diabetes education classes offered Tuesday evenings or Wednesday mornings
    • New classes starting every month
    • Tuesdays - 5:30 to 7:30 pm
    • Wednesdays - 9:30 to 11:30 am
  • Free monthly support group on the first Thursday of each month from 11 am to noon

Living Well with Diabetes Class: Opportunities and Encouragement

Our world-class Diabetes Care team at AdventHealth offers the tools you need to keep your diabetes in check. One of those tools is our Living Well with Diabetes class that provides education and encouragement through a classroom and support group mixed learning environment. Arm yourself with the information you need to make smart lifestyle choices.

  • February 7: Medications for Diabetes Management - Learn about the latest medications available to treat diabetes including a hands-on demonstration.
  • March 7: Healthy Eating for People Living with Diabetes - Let's talk carb counting and healthy eating basics with a registered dietitian.
  • April 4: Keeping a Healthy Gut - Learn how to get your probiotics through nutrition.
  • May 2: Cooking Class - Whip up some fast and tasty dishes with our dietitians.
  • June 6: Introduction to the American Diabetes Association - Learn the resources and opportunities available to you at the local and national level.
  • July: No meeting this month - Happy 4th of July!
  • August 1: Diabetes and a Hospital Stay - Learn what you can expect if you are admitted to the hospital as a person with diabetes.

  • October 3: Nutrition Jeopardy - Learn about controlling your diabetes through an interactive game of Jeopardy.
  • November 7: Gearing up for the Holiday Season - Get ideas to make your holidays, family dinners and travel with diabetes go more smoothly.

Stop Diabetes Before it Starts

Every day you try to feel your best. We want to make sure you can feel well now and into the future. Part of that mission is diagnosing diabetes so you can control it, and even stopping diabetes before it starts whenever possible. That's why at AdventHealth, formerly Shawnee Mission Health, we host classes where you can come and learn prediabetes and how to prevent a diabetes diagnosis from advanced practice nurses and registered dietitians.

There is no cost to attend this group class.

This class is held from 6 pm to 8 pm in the Woodland Hills Building, 7315 E. Frontage Road.

 

Diabetes Class: After Your Hospital Stay

This class is open to anyone recently hospitalized at AdventHealth with a history of diabetes. Led by our certified diabetes nurse educator, learn how to handle the challenges that often occur when transitioning from the hospital back to your home environment. Bring your blood sugar logbook, meter and list of diabetes medications.

There is no cost to attend this group class.

This class is held from 11 am to Noon in the main hospital. Enter via the Outpatient Entrance and proceed to the Community Education classroom.
