AdventHealth Orlando recognized as Center of Excellence for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 22, 2020 — AdventHealth Orlando’s hypertrophic cardiomyopathy program, which is part of the AdventHealth Cardiovascular Institute, was named as an HCMA Recognized Center of Excellence by the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA).

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common congenital heart disease. Patients with HCM may experience shortness of breath, chest pressure, palpitations, lightheadedness and fainting. If left untreated, it can cause advanced heart failure or cardiac arrest.

The HCMA recognized AdventHealth Orlando as an HCM center of excellence for providing expert treatment and quality care to patients with the disease. The physicians at AdventHealth have experience treating the different clinical presentations of this condition, which may include congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias or sudden cardiac death.

“AdventHealth Orlando is honored to be named as the only HCM center of excellence in Central Florida,” said Dr. Marcos Hazday, a cardiologist and HCM program director at AdventHealth Orlando. “HCM can cause cardiac complications that negatively impact patients’ lives. Receiving expert care makes a huge difference in the diagnosis and treatment, identifying ways patients can lead healthy, strong lives.”

The criteria for Center of Excellence status includes the ability to have a full service HCM center for therapy (medication or invasive therapy), heart transplantation, ICD placement, mental health, social work, genetic testing and research. High volume care centers for HCM have advanced research and improved outcomes.

“We are pleased to welcome AdventHealth to the family of HCMA Recognized Centers of Excellence. This model of care provides superior patient outcomes and enhances the ability of the patient and family to access comprehensive care for HCM,” said Lisa Salberg, founder and CEO of HCMA.
