Clinical Pastoral Education
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is practical theological education for ministry of all types, learned in a clinical setting. At AdventHealth, we are pleased to have a wide variety of clinical settings across Central Florida in which students may receive pastoral training.
CPE brings theological students, clergy persons, religious community members, and qualified lay persons into supervised ministry encounters with the critical human experience of the clinical environment, the “living human document”. An inductive learning process is the foundation of this method of pastoral care formation, skill, identity development and interpersonal competence.
Ministry and pastoral care with people in crisis is at the heart of learning through reflection, discussion and critical evaluation with other students and the supervisor.
The CPE Process
The CPE process utilizes verbatim, case studies, and other methods for reporting one’s ministry and pastoral care for self-evaluation and group supervision. The discussions surrounding one’s ministry focus on what is happening with the caregiver, as much as what is happening with the people receiving ministry.
CPE students structured education sessions involve weekly seminars, and supervision which focus on theological, medical, psychological, emotional, interpersonal and group dynamics. These sessions along with the clinical experience and related reading, provide opportunities for challenge, support, caregiving and personal reflection.
In CPE, students enter a pastoral training program of small-group, action-reflection-action learning. Spiritual Care Leadership development is fostered by:
- Personal goal-setting and ongoing reflection within a safe and respectful small group context
- Theological, spiritual and personal reflection
- Facilitated peer dialogue
- Collaboration with doctors, hospital staff and a team approach to patient care
- One-on-one consultation regularly with a CPE Supervisor
- Reflective self and group evaluation process
As a CPE student at AdventHealth, you can expect:
- To be involved in ministry in a wide range of clinical contexts and a diversity of patients, families and staff, while functioning as a part of the multidisciplinary care team
- To be encouraged and challenged to become excellent in pastoral care ministry, to expect more from yourself than you imagine, and to participate in providing effective and meaningful pastoral care for every person, every time
- To learn about yourself as person, as learner, as colleague in the learning process and as a minister to persons in crisis
- To learn about how your strengths and weaknesses, your brokenness and wholeness, your faith and your doubts – inhibit and enhance your spiritual care practice
AdventHealth CPE System Center is accredited by ACPE, Inc. to offer Level 1, Level 2 and Certified Candidate Education, in a challenging and supportive learning environment.
ACPE, Inc. Center?
- What is CPE?
-
CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) is a method of theological education through practical training in pastoral care skills, concepts and ministry. ACPE, Inc. CPE is a professional standard for pastoral care education. ACPE and ACPE accredited centers and certified Supervisors have a history of quality education that is recognized by professional ministerial associations, judicatories, and accredited theological academic institutions and whose accreditation is recognized by the US Department of Education.
ACPE accredits centers for conducting CPE by utilizing a process and a structure to evaluate the institutional issues related to where CPE will be held. This assures the student that the institution that provides for their clinical experience is financially stable, employs qualified supervisors, provides curriculum that has been reviewed by others, offers evaluations and sets standards for treatment and safety of students.
- ACPE Standards
-
ACPE Standards for ongoing accreditation of a CPE Center are systematically reviewed to insure that there is consistency in practice for the center and its supervisors. ACPE is committed to quality and consumer protection; therefore as an association we have our Standards externally reviewed by the US Department of Education every five years and have their recognition as an indicator of our values and practice. We require all accredited centers undergo both five and ten year reviews in order to maintain their individual accreditation status. These strict guidelines for accreditation and recognition by the US Department of Education make CPE at an ACPE accredited program acceptable for academic credit and for VA benefits.
ACPE has a process by which problems at an accredited center may be immediately addressed through a called review of accreditation in order to assure compliance and maintenance of Standards. ACPE accreditation and certification standards are approved for Board Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the National Association of Jewish Chaplains and other professional chaplaincy organizations.
- ACPE Certified Educators
-
*+/-ACPE Certified Educators have completed a process of training that provides for multiple opportunities to have their work evaluated by other professionals in order for certification as a CPE Certified Educator to be granted. This process follows standards for training that have been scrutinized and recognized as part of the ACPE accreditation process.
ACPE Certified Educators are required to participate in regular review processes as well as continuing education in order to maintain their certification as Certified Educators.
ACPE CPE is guided by Standards as well as defined outcomes and objectives for student learning. These standards, along with certification and accreditation requirements are available for review by visiting the ACPE, Inc. website: www.acpe.edu.
