Sprained Ankle
A sprained ankle is an extremely common injury that most people will experience at some point in their lives. It occurs when the foot rolls, twists or turns in an unnatural way and the ligaments of the ankle are stretched too far or are torn. While minor ankle sprains can heal with home care, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a bad ankle sprain and a broken ankle, and both of these need to be evaluated by your physician. You should consider seeing a doctor for an ankle injury if you cannot bear weight on that side, if significant swelling is involved, or if swelling does not go down after following R.I.C.E guidelines (rest, ice, compression, elevation) for several days.
