Prostatitis

When the prostate gland becomes swollen and inflamed, this condition is known as prostatitis and it may be due to a bacterial infection that can be readily treated with antibiotics. Pain, urinary difficulties and repeated bladder infections are all potential signs of prostatitis. This condition occurs as either acute or chronic bacterial prostatitis or chronic nonbacterial prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Men who have recently undergone a procedure where a urinary catheter was employed have a higher risk of developing prostatitis, as do those who have had a recent bladder infection, who suffer from an enlarged prostate (BPH) or who have a urinary tract abnormality. Urologists can provide multiple treatments for prostatitis depending on its cause, including but not limited to antibiotic and pain meds, supportive therapies and surgical removal of part of the prostate.
