Pilonidal Cyst Treatment
A painful infection that occurs at the very bottom part of the spine is called a pilonidal cyst. This type of infection must be surgically treated with an incision and drainage procedure and won’t go away just by using an antibiotic medication. Because ingrown hairs may cause a pilonidal cyst to reoccur, pilonidal cyst treatment may include removing hair follicles as well as the infection. For patients who continue to experience problems with a pilonidal cyst that refuses to heal, a pilonidal cystectomy can be performed to excise the entire area. In most cases, surgery to address a pilonidal cyst is performed on an outpatient basis with no overnight hospital stay required.
