Insomnia
Most adults have experienced insomnia – the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep -- at one time or another. Whether due to emotional stress, physical pain or discomfort, medications, alterations in one’s sleep schedule, an airway issue (as in obstructive sleep apnea) or environmental factors such as too much light or too much noise, this common sleep disorder can result in general fatigue, memory and concentration issues, irritability, weight gain and other health impacts. Patients who experience chronic insomnia may be referred for a sleep study to determine the cause for them not being able to get a good night’s rest. Common treatments for insomnia include lifestyle modifications such as following a regular nighttime routine and going to bed at the same time each night, avoiding caffeine, getting regular exercise and stress management strategies.
