Hormone therapy can be provided for men who experience symptoms of reduced testosterone production that may occur as they age. Such symptoms include reduced bone density and muscle mass; reduced libido and sexual function; changes to sleep patterns, red blood cell production and moods; and reduced sperm production. Testosterone replacement is accomplished by injections that are provided by your doctor every two to three weeks, or via a daily testosterone patch or topical testosterone gel. Another type of hormone therapy provided to men is called androgen suppression therapy, which is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Here, drugs and/or surgical treatment may be provided to reduce androgen production by the testicles, which can cause prostate cancers to cease growing or shrink.
