Heart Surgery
Heart surgery can be performed in both adults and children to correct a congenital or acquired problem ranging from a heart defect to coronary artery disease. Common heart surgeries include valve repair or replacement, bypass surgery, atrial myxoma treatment, pacemaker implantation, atrial fibrillation treatment and full heart transplantation. Surgeries can be done through a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach or a traditional open procedure, depending on the specific operation and severity of the condition being treated. Your doctor will discuss the different surgical options that are available to you, as well as how to prepare for your surgery and discharge information. Most heart surgeries will require a hospital stay in order to monitor your vital signs and see how you are responding. For many patients, heart surgery can help reduce a patient's symptoms and improve their quality of life, while in more severe cases, it can increase a person's chance of survival or even extend their life.
