Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes is a complication of pregnancy in which changes to the way that the body processes glucose can cause high blood sugar levels that may impact both the mother’s and baby’s health. This condition disappears soon after the baby is delivered, but patients who have experienced gestational diabetes are at greater risk than others for developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. Mothers with the condition can help control it by eating healthy foods, exercising and, when necessary, taking prescribed medication. A continuous glucose monitor may also be employed to help keep an eye on blood sugar levels throughout the pregnancy.
