Not every lump or suspicious area within a breast turns out to be cancerous. In fact, there are many benign conditions that may be detected via a clinical breast exam, mammogram or other diagnostic means. These include hyperplasia, benign breast cysts, intraductal papillomas, radial scars, fibroadenomas (non-cancerous solid tumors) and sclerosing adenosis. Understanding that certain benign breast disorders can increase a person’s risk for developing cancer, it’s important to have any breast abnormality checked out by your physician as soon as possible, and to be sure and have regular mammogram screenings as directed by your doctor.
