The Barrx procedure is a recently-developed technique used for treating patients with Barrett’s esophagus – an abnormal condition in which cells similar to those found in the intestines replace the esophagus’s normal lining. This condition can sometimes be the result of chronic heartburn or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Since Barrett’s esophagus signals an increased risk for esophageal cancer, treatment of the condition may be recommended. In the Barrx procedure, an endoscope (a narrow tube with a small light and camera at one end) is used to exactly locate the affected area or areas of the esophagus. A special device that releases carefully controlled radio-frequency energy is then attached to the end of the endoscope catheter. This device destroys the abnormal cells, without damaging the surrounding normal tissues.
