As the holiday season approaches, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale and La Grange hospitals are inviting individuals and community groups to donate blankets to support the Three Wishes Program, an initiative dedicated to providing personalized end-of-life care that honors the dignity of patients and supports their families.
The Three Wishes Program allows patients and families to personalize end-of-life care by selecting three meaningful keepsakes or gestures, such as a card with a loved one’s fingerprint or a printout of their heartbeat. The blankets, often crafted and donated by hospital volunteers and community members, remain one of the most requested and cherished items.
A cornerstone of the program is the handmade blanket, provided to patients in intensive care and palliative care units to create a comforting and familiar environment. These blankets are not for warmth alone, as they bring a sense of peace and ambience to a patient during a difficult time.
“Blankets are the most requested item in the program, and we can always use more,” said Cathy Ballenger, RN, director, Nursing, Critical Care division at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth La Grange. “Every donation helps bring comfort and dignity to patients.”
The holidays are a wonderful time for families, co-workers and community organizations to complete a meaningful project for patients. Donations can be dropped off at the Hinsdale campus (120 N. Oak St.) or La Grange campus (5101 Willow Springs Rd.). Here are some tips:
- All materials must be brand new. Donations can be store-bought or handmade, using new materials. All sizes are accepted.
- Individuals or groups can make no-sew, fleece tie blankets, using at least 2 yards of material in various colors and patterns.
- Donations of fleece (minimum of 2 yards) are welcomed as well, for our UChicago Medicine AdventHealth volunteers to make the blankets.
For more information or to donate, contact Cathy Ballenger at Call815-351-3903 or email Cathy.Ballenger@adventhealth.com.
