Pioneering New Technology for Better Heart Health
The future of cardiovascular care is looking brighter every day, thanks to advancements in health care technology — some of which were pioneered right here at AdventHealth.
Our innovative technology makes better heart care possible for each person we serve, from new 3D mapping systems to pacemakers that are less than one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker.
Discover how we’re constantly innovating our heart care with new technology and devices that can boost your health without invasive procedures.

- ECMO Life Support
-
If needed, our experienced teams can provide extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) life support for patients with heart or lung failure. Patients experiencing refractory hypoxemia caused by an acute respiratory condition (ARDS, asthma, aspiration pneumonitis, viral/bacterial pneumonia or other respiratory condition) may also be candidates for ECMO.
ECMO is a sophisticated process that adds oxygen to the blood of patients whose lungs are too diseased to work efficiently. It is a bypass process, meaning that the blood is taken out of the body, cleaned of carbon dioxide and infused with oxygen, then returned to the body. The blood bypasses the lungs, or the heart and lungs, depending on the situation.
ECMO is much like a heart-lung bypass which is used during open-heart surgery, except the ECMO machine is smaller, more portable and can be used for longer periods. Ultimately, ECMO helps save the lives of patients who otherwise may not have survived. - Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion
-
More transplant options, less wait time. By implementing this advanced technology, we can help increase the percentage of donor organs that are fully qualified and ready to meet our patients’ treatment needs.
- The da Vinci Xi Surgical System
-
The da Vinci robotic surgical system allows surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions, which improves patient outcomes and reduces recovery times. Advanced technologies like the da Vinci continue to improve patient care, making surgeries safer and more precise. Our dedicated physicians and specially-trained teams perform the following robotic-assisted heart procedures:
- Bypass surgery
- Left atrial appendage ligation
- Pericardial window surgery
- Robotic revascularization
- Surgical treatment of heart disease and arrhythmias
Our procedure availability varies by location. Please talk with your provider about our procedures and technologies available near you.
- Impella® Heart Pump
-
The Impella® heart pump is the world's smallest heart pump. This implantable device temporarily improves blood flow, giving your heart the chance to rest and recover after a cardiac event. It is usually removed within a few days, once your heart begins to heal.

- Heartmate III™
-
Breathe easier and boost your strength with the Heartmate III™, the new gold standard in vascular assistance devices. This innovative left ventricular assistive device (LVAD) technology may be an excellent option if you’re a heart failure patient; it will help pump blood through your body, increasing the flow of oxygen to your organs.
The AdventHealth Cardiovascular Institute was ranked number six in the United States for the Heartmate III™ trial in 2016, making us the most experienced in Florida when it comes to implanting this potentially lifesaving device.
- Left Atrial Appendage Closure Devices
-
Many people with an irregular heartbeat condition, called atrial fibrillation, must take blood thinners to reduce the risk of having a stroke. However, some can’t tolerate the medication or wish to ease off of it, which is where implantable devices like WATCHMAN™ can help. These devices fit inside and close off the left atrial appendage, a small pouch in the top left heart chamber, to prevent blood clots and stroke.
- MitraClip®
-
If traditional open-heart surgery isn’t an option for you, a mitral valve clip called MitraClip® is a safer, more effective treatment that’s minimally invasive and allows for a faster recovery. Your surgeon will connect the mitral valve clip to areas of the mitral valve and position it in real time, decreasing your risk of heart failure.
Our Orlando institute has the largest MitraClip® program by volume in Florida, so you can find comfort knowing our surgeons perform more MitraClip® procedures than any other hospital in Florida. - Percutaneous Valve Technology
-
Less-invasive heart valve treatment often means faster healing. We’re a national leader in percutaneous valve technology, with one of the largest transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) programs in the country.
- TAVR
-
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) gives you another option for heart surgery when traditional open-heart surgery isn’t the best fit for you. The procedure, initially available only to those at high risk of complications from traditional surgeries, was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in moderate-risk patients.
Our surgeons were some of the first to perform this minimally invasive procedure, and with one of the largest TAVR programs in the country, we’re a national leader in this percutaneous valve technology.
- Total Artificial Heart
-
We’re pushing forward to provide more options for your heart. In October 2017, we performed our first total artificial heart implant, establishing a viable alternative to a traditional transplant.
- TriClip™
-
TriClip™ is a groundbreaking device that helps improve everyday functioning and quality of life for people with symptomatic severe tricuspid regurgitation, a condition where a valve of the heart doesn't close properly. Implanted in a minimally invasive procedure, TriClip™ is a great option for people who are considered medium or high risk for traditional surgery.
