SOMMA2: Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging



The goal of SOMMA is to better understand why some people lose muscle strength and mobility as they get older and how this might lead to difficulties with everyday activities. SOMMA is a national study with over 800 current participants. SOMMA provides opportunities for scientific advancement in both the understanding of aging and the novel use of methods to assess aging-related outcomes, such as cognitive and physical function. This data is meant to show the path towards developing new approaches for preserving walking ability as long as possible. To be enrolled in this study, you must meet certain requirements. You may be eligible to participate if you meet the following criteria: Study Duration: 3 years Study Commitment: Visits: 3 baseline visits 6-month phone contacts Annual follow-up visits Age: Greater than or equal to 70 years old Sex: Male and Female Conditions/Eligibility: Able to attend in-person clinic visits Willing to have an MRI scan and muscle tissue collection Study Procedures: Vision tests Physical function and exercise tests Cognitive function tests MRI scan Muscle tissue collection Compensation: Up to $450
