Vaginal agenesis is a birth defect that causes the vagina to not form in a female baby. Vaginal agenesis occurs before birth during embryologic development and it affects one in every five thousand female infants. There are many variations to vaginal agenesis, and babies with this condition may have a smaller uterus, or no uterus at all. Treatment for this condition will vary, but may include non-surgical methods such as self-dilation, or surgical procedures such as a vaginoplasty. Some patients may have difficulty getting pregnant or be unable to get pregnant, but most patients can lead a normal lifestyle after treatment.
