As you age, you may notice a web-like pattern of red or blue lines that appears on your feet or legs – these are small, dilated blood vessels that are very near to the skin’s surface. They are caused by increased pressure in the veins, and may be due to a hereditary component. Patients whose spider veins are symptomatic may experience a heavy or fatigued feeling in their legs, or possibly some swelling. Your likelihood of developing them increases if you are overweight, if you have to stand for extended periods, or if you routinely cross your legs while sitting. Spider legs can easily be treated by your physician with outpatient procedures including sclerotherapy and laser surgery.
