Rectovaginal Fistula

A rectovaginal fistula is a relatively rare occurrence in which there is an abnormal connection between the rectum and vagina that allows stool to leak from one organ to the other. This may occur as a symptom of another medical condition such as an infection or cancer, and it can result in repeated vaginal or urinary tract infections along with painful intercourse and abnormal vaginal discharge. Other possible causes of and contributors to a rectovaginal fistula include Crohn’s disease, vaginal trauma, radiation therapy, diverticulitis or a congenital condition with which a person was born. While some rectovaginal fistulas may close without medical treatment, the majority do require surgical repair. In some cases, this surgery may include a temporary colostomy to allow the area to heal properly for a designated amount of time.
