Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common occurrences in children and may develop anywhere throughout the urinary system – including the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Their most common location is in the bladder and urethra, and girls are more likely to develop them than boys. Typical symptoms include painful urination, a constant feeling of needing to urinate, discolored or cloudy urine, pelvic pain or pressure, and bedwetting after having been toilet trained. While treatment for a UTI is usually quick and easy with oral or injected antibiotic medications, children who experience frequent UTIs should be evaluated by a specialist. Continued infections can lead to kidney damage in some children.
