Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound

A nuchal translucency ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless imaging test provided to women who are between their 11th and 13th week of pregnancy for purposes of evaluating the baby’s risk if Down Syndrome, congenital heart problems and other abnormalities related to chromosomal issues. The test works by using sound waves to visualize the back of the baby’s neck, which is where excessive fluid may accumulate and cause the tissue to become thicker when an abnormal condition occurs during the first trimester. A normal nuchal ultrasound indicates that the baby is unlikely to have Down Syndrome or another genetic disorder; however, an abnormal finding does not necessarily mean one of these conditions is present. Additional testing is needed to determine a diagnosis.
