Neuropsychological Evaluation
Neuropsychological evaluation is one of the many tests performed when a patient has been recommended for surgery to address epileptic seizures. This painless evaluation can take several hours to perform, particularly in the case of small children and those with significant cognitive challenges. During this testing, a specially trained physician will assess the patient’s IQ, language and visual-spatial skills, memory, problem-solving, motor skills and behavioral characteristics in order to zero in on where a potential problem may be and also to establish a “baseline” for a patient’s functioning prior to a new treatment. This testing is also repeated as part of a patient’s follow-up evaluations after epilepsy surgery.
