A neurological exam is a comprehensive evaluation of the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. A patient who is experiencing unexplained symptoms such as slurred speech, weakness or numbness/tingling in the extremities, blurry vision, headaches, seizures or tremors may be a candidate for neurological evaluation. Athletes who have experienced a blow to the head are also evaluated for concussion via neurological evaluation, as may be expected for anyone who has had a traumatic injury to their head, neck or spine. Areas on which the health care provider focuses during a neurological exam include reflexes, balance, mental acuity/awareness and sensory perceptions such as touch, smell, light sensitivity, vision, hearing and more.
