Motility Disorders
Motility disorders are conditions in which the body’s ability to move food, liquids and waste through the digestive tract is impaired. These problems include reflux issues (GERD) and vomiting, where substances go in the wrong direction. They also include problems such as constipation and intestinal blockage, where substances move too slowly or not at all. In other cases, motility disorders cause substances to move too quickly or uncontrollably, as in diarrhea or urinary or fecal incontinence. In all such cases, a person’s digestion of essential nutrients and minerals can be compromised, leading to other health issues. Common symptoms may include indigestion, nausea, weight loss, abdominal pain and general discomfort.
