Mitral Valve Prolapse
Mitral valve prolapse is an acquired heart condition in which the valve that separates the left upper and lower chambers is unable to close correctly. This condition can potentially allow blood to seep backward into the left atrium. While many people who have mitral valve prolapse are unaware of it and experience no side effects, some possible symptoms include heart arrhythmias, shortness of breath, chest pain and a lightheaded feeling. Symptomatic patients may be treated with medications including aspirin, blood thinners, beta blockers and other prescribed drugs or minimally invasive surgery to repair or replace a valve.
