LEEP Procedure
LEEP is an acronym for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure. This is an approximately 20-minute gynecologic procedure in which abnormal cells that were discovered during colposcopy and/or a regular Pap test can be removed. The “loop” refers to a small loop electrode that is used like a scalpel to remove the abnormal tissue via a mild electrical current. Patients who undergo LEEP are usually advised to take an over-the-counter pain medication prior to the procedure, and a local anesthetic is used to minimize any discomfort while your gynecologist is working. The electrical loop is only activated when the suspicious cells have been found. Tissue that is removed will be sent to the lab for closer analysis. The patient will need to return to the doctor’s office for an examination within 2-4 weeks of the procedure just to make sure everything has healed.
