Women who experience abnormally heavy menstrual periods, symptomatic uterine fibroids, pelvic adhesive disease, pelvic pain, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis and other issues that are often addressed via hysterectomy may opt for an alternative treatment method such as endometrial ablation or laparoscopic myomectomy. In endometrial ablation, rather than removing the entire uterus, the lining of the uterine cavity is removed. This procedure allows many women to avoid a hysterectomy when abnormal bleeding is their primary symptom. Alternatively, when large fibroid tumors are the cause of a woman’s uncomfortable symptoms, a myomectomy may be performed to remove those fibroids and allow the uterus to remain. This more complex procedure allows a woman to retain the ability to have children if she so chooses.
