Sleep apnea – a condition in which a person continually stops breathing during their sleep due to an obstructed airway or other reason – can actually contribute to heart disease because of the way it deprives the heart of needed oxygen, causing high blood pressure and the release of substances that may damage the lining of the blood vessels. Specific heart conditions linked to sleep apnea include heart failure, heart arrhythmias, coronary artery disease and stroke. Patients who experience chronic sleep apnea and heart disease require a comprehensive approach to their care and multidisciplinary expertise from both cardiac and sleep apnea experts. Treatments for sleep apnea can include sleep studies, C-PAP devices, lifestyle modifications and – when necessary – precise surgical procedures that can be performed by a trained head and neck surgeon or ENT to remove the blockage or restructure the airway.
