Event Monitoring
Event monitoring is the continuous recording of the patient’s electrocardiogram (ECG) reading during periods of abnormal heart activity such as a racing or slowed heartbeat. It is accomplished via a cardiac event recording device or Holter monitor that is worn on the patient’s body and records and/or transmits the needed information for a cardiologist’s review. Physician practices that offer event monitoring can receive transmissions of your ECG from your event monitor via telephone for prompt review by your doctor. Some event monitors have a “looping memory” that records your ECG for a set amount of time before and after you push a button at the onset of heart-related symptoms such as dizziness or being out of breath. Other “symptom event monitors” only store information from the time that they are activated by the patient.
