Encephalitis
Encephalitis is a severe and acute infection that results in inflammation of the tissues and membranes that cover the brain. The condition can be extremely serious and even life-threatening if left untreated, particularly in children. The most common form of treatment for encephalitis is hospitalization followed by the introduction of antiviral medication. Hydration and IV fluid monitoring is necessary to prevent brain swelling. Since encephalitis is a virus, antibiotics are not effective in treating it - and surgery is likewise not an option. Careful follow-up care is also important and may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and behavioral therapy/psychotherapy.
