Cortical dysplasia is a brain disorder that affects the formation of the cortex (the outer layer of neural tissue) and can lead to epilepsy in both children and adults. This condition is congenital, which means it is present at birth. Patients with cortical dysplasia have neurons in the brain that fail to position correctly, causing a misfire that can trigger a seizure. Cortical dysplasia is usually treated and managed with prescription medication, including anticonvulsive drugs. If medication fails to provide needed symptom relief, then surgery may be considered.
